Flame's Pregnancy

Updated 08/06/2015

Pregnancy Whelping & Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4
Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8 Weight Chart

Click here to learn more about this breeding, the sire and dam, pedigree, etc.   Click here for shortcut to Shane's page.

This page will be added to as warranted so future puppy owners, friends, students and family can keep track of Flame's progress.  You may also want to visit the web site of one of my best friends, Debbie La Monica, whose whippet bitch is about two weeks ahead of Flame in her pregnancy.  I love Deb's web site for its humor, photos and educational information:  Vivace Whippets.  A big thanks to Deb for allowing me to "borrow" some of her "scientific simplifications and interpretations for those of us who don't have a medical or veterinary background!

I have chosen to breed to either Rogue or Shane, who are litter brothers.  Both dogs are fantastic and their pedigree is a very nice line breeding for Flame.   The pedigree goes back to some of my favorite old dogs, including Ch. Lorjen Heir Apparent (Bobby) and Ch. Rolin Ridge's Fourteen Karat (Midas) on both sides.

Rogue is first choice because he is local.  First lesson learned:  Have back-up stud dog on standby in case something unexpected happens, which it did.  Rogue had suffered an injury back in April and there was some concern about his ability to breed in the future.  However, we successfully collected him via an AI in June.  At that point we assumed everything was okay.  It turns out that there may be scar tissue that has formed since June, which is the reason he was unable to perform.  His owner will be having further tests done.

A million thanks to Don & Carol Morris, Shane's owner/breeder (also Rogue's breeder) for their willingness to drop everything and meet me in Medford, OR!

Thurs.

Up at 4 am to drive to Medford, OR, with Mary Berry as co-pilot.  She got us an appointment for an AI (if needed) at Medford Animal Hospital, Stephen Bernard, DVM, 619 Market St., 97504, (541) 772-2222 at 11:40 am.  Met Don at 11 am at motel.  Dogs sniffed noses and flirted in the parking lot.  Went to vet clinic where they allowed us to use their play yard (15 x 15 fenced & covered run).  Within a minute of unsnapping leashes, Shane was on and quickly achieved inside tie that lasted 13 minutes.  Flame was perfect brood bitch – flirted and stood totally still.  I supported dogs during the tie.  She whimpered a little a couple of times.  Shane was the perfect stud dog.  Vet looked at drop of ejaculate remaining on penis after he withdrew and found “moderate” amount of sperm.   Heat wave in Medford – temperature 104 degrees.  Went back to motel with Don & Shane.  Dogs crated & just fine while we went to eat and spent several hours in room. / Both dogs & all humans very happy & tired. / Vet staff was WONDERFUL – send flowers & thank you card.

Met Don at 6 am at vet clinic where we achieved second natural breeding with another 13 minute inside tie.  Temperature forecast for 109 degrees.  Theme for litter – HOT temperatures or HOT to trot. / Both dogs & all humans very happy & tired. / Got back to Seattle at 8:30 pm.   Very tired, relieved and happy. / Don drove home to pick up Carol, Kayla and more dogs so they could then head to Reno for obedience & rally trials this weekend.

Discharge is definitely much less.  Some watery & light colored with one spot of darker red in britches.

2

Sun.

7/23

More discharge than yesterday; brighter red (more blood colored).  Acting very sweet; wants to cuddle even though it’s very hot.  Unusual for Flame to want to cuddle so much when it's this hot.  Tyler is flirting with her.

3

Mon.

7/24

More discharge than yesterday; brighter red (more blood colored).  Can you tell by her expression whether or not she's pregnant?   Tyler still thinks she's pretty cute, but she won't have anything to do with him (in that way!).  Photos taken today.  Journey, Keeper, Flame & Tyler (left to right) in group photo.

Tues.

7/25

Very little discharge; very diluted & watery; only ate about half of her dinner

It's so hard to answer the question:  is she or isn't she?  Only Mother Nature knows for sure.  Interesting observations:  She is definitely more affectionate than normal and wants to cuddle more.  AND, she threw up (regurgitated :-) the last few bites of her dinner this evening -- a behavior not uncommon to nursing mothers and/or pregnant bitches who might have a little morning/evening sickness.

14 Fri. 8/4 I think she had a little morning sickness today -- at least that's what I'm hoping it was!.
15 Sat. 8/5 Crystal Family 08 04 06.JPG (59891 bytes)    Flame's sister, Crystal, has been spending a few days with us while her family is on vacation.  Left: Crystal, Flame, Journey, Tyler, Keeper.  Right:  Crystal.  Crissie-Criss-Criss as I call her was and still is the sweetest Belgian I've ever known.  She loves everyone and everyone loves her.  Crystal is CH Kaylan's Crystal Persuasion.
16 Sun. 8/6
17 Mon. 8/7 Nothing new.  Ultrasound is 10 days away.  I can hardly wait.  If she's pregnant, this is about the time that the embryos will begin attaching to the endometrium.   The Belgian Regional Specialty is Friday, Aug. 11, in Lacey, WA.  Don & Carol Morris, Shane and some of their other black dogs will be coming up for the Specialty, so I'm excited to see them again.   Click here for a link to the judging program.

19 Weds. 8/9
20 Thurs. 8/10 Although there hasn't been any more actual "sickness" Flame obviously has an upset tummy.  Not much in the way of food interests her, so we've been doing quite a bit of bribing to get her to eat!   There have been several very interesting behavior changes in the past few days, including cleaning Grandpa Tyler's face (which he accepts with a very confused look on his face), standing over Tyler and Journey so they can "nurse" (of course neither of them know what she wants...only a breeder would recognize the behavior).   Flame is sleeping more than normal, as well.
21 Fri. 8/11 We visited with Shane and his entire family at the Regional.  Shane looked great in both Best of Breed competition as well as Open A.  Click here to check out new photos taken at the Regional.

25 Tues. 8/15 Yes, I humiliated Flame by making her lay on her side and expose her tummy (left).  Keeper and Journey had to get in on the action by joining Flame on the guest bed (right).   Only two more days until we know for sure!  In the meantime, Flame seems to be enjoying lots of naps throughout the day.
26 Weds. 8/16
27 Thurs. 8/17

Yes, Flame is definitely pregnant.  Click on the thumbnail of the ultrasound at left to see a larger version.  Three puppies are visible in this image and veterinarian Elizabeth Facciotti, DVM counted 7 puppies for sure, but thinks there are 1 or 2 more that were moving around in there.   We are very excited!
28 Fri. 8/18 We had a mid-pregnancy check up with Dr. Cumming at Spring Glen today.  Everything is looking good, although Flame needs to start eating more!    She's lost a couple of pounds, which is not that unusual, especially when the mother-to-be has morning sickness.
29 Sat. 8/19
30 Sun. 8/20 The whelping box has been repainted and installed in the dining room.  I brought all my whelping blankets and towels home from storage and the laundry process has begun.  Flame has started trying to excavate a nest in the back yard, so I'll get her a pile of blankets to mess up in her whelping box.  In the meantime, she can't be left alone in the backyard, otherwise she tries to find a new spot that hasn't been blocked with stepping stones, chicken wire, fencing, etc., to dig.
31 Mon. 8/21 Flame's favorite meals the past few days have consisted of steak, roast beef, chicken, baby food (chicken & beef puree' plus toddler turkey sticks) and Natural Balance.  She seems to have put herself on a high protein, low carb diet, which is fine at this point.  She's getting her folic acid, omega 3 and pregnancy vitamin supplements, as well.  Her coat is gorgeous (that pregnancy bloom) and she's as uppity as ever.   Today is the half-way point -- approximately 32 more days before puppies arrive!

I've always been a big believer in getting first-time mothers used to their whelping box long before the puppies arrive.  Flame's box is now set up in the dining room, which is just off our kitchen through a doorway.  I like to have the box in a corner so mom feels more secure, but when whelping time comes we can pull everything out to the middle of the room for easier access.   Although this isn't my perfect house for whelping puppies, reprioritizing the use of the dining & living rooms, together with rearranging furniture, will make it quite comfortable and workable.

Because Flame is in major nesting mode (yes, already), trying to find a dark, low spot to prepare as a place to whelp, I draped a sheet over the x-pens on either side of the box and put some stuffed toys inside (yes, she's been laying on top of toys lately, too).  My goal is to convince her that the whelping box is better than the area behind the couch, behind the computers, in the closet, under the fireplace hearth, etc., etc., etc.  This location is close enough for Flame to feel part of the group, yet it can be baby-gated off from the other dogs, and still allows the rest of the family the rooms in which they're used to spending a lot of time.  There are comfortable chairs for visitors to sit and hold puppies, a shelving unit for supplies, the dining room table for a work surface, and a little view of Lake Washington for daydreaming.

It's also important that mom-to-be gets used to spending time alone, away from the other dogs and humans.  (That's one of the biggest reasons, in my humble opinion, why some bitches don't make good mothers.  They've been doted on by their humans, spoiled, never left alone, etc., so when puppies arrive the new moms don't understand they have a job to do.  They have to be forced to stay in the whelping box, nurse, etc. and the humans end up doing a lot more of the work to make up for what mother dog is lacking.)   Flame is already used to, and comfortable, being alone because all my dogs grow up with a varied routine -- sometimes they're together, sometimes they're alone, sometimes they go with me, sometimes they stay home, etc.

After Flame's puppies are born and mobile, they can have access to the kitchen, family room and outside to the back yard with just a few alterations to the set-up.   I still need to move extra dining room chairs out of the room, etc., but things are taking shape.  And, most importantly, there's a comfortable couch for human sleeping when the time comes.

I'm trying to get organized as quickly as possible because my dear husband, Gary, goes into the hospital on Sept. 6 for two back surgeries, a week apart.  He'll be hospitalized from Sept. 6 until Sept. 14 or 15 -- and yes, puppies are due Sept. 16 to 18.  Fortunately I have lots of friends who will be helping out.  Some are being assigned to husband-sit and others to Flame-sit, since I don't like to leave a pregnant bitch alone the week prior to her whelping.

34 Thurs. 8/24 I had a few minutes early this morning before I left for work.  I put the video Carol Morris sent me from Shane's first litter (temperament testing, etc.).  Wonderful litter...makes me even more excited.  Evidently it made Flame excited too.  She was sitting on my lap on the couch WATCHING THE PUPPIES ON THE TV.   Next time I put it on, I'll have the digital camera handy!

39 / 44 Tues. 8/29 Dates from here forward include day # post-ovulation.  First # is post-breeding. Second # is post-ovulation.  Whelping usually occurs 63 days post-ovulation.  For example, today is 39 days post-breeding and 43 days post-ovulation -- so 20 days to go!
40 / 45 Weds. 8/30

Today's photos include Flame on the living room couch.  She's started spending more time on her back, typical of my bitches at this point in their pregnancy.  Flame is starting to get the famous "football figure" and every day I spend a little time with my hand on her belly, hoping to feel puppy movement.  (Not yet!)   The x-pen photo shows Flame spending time confined more closely to her whelping box because the last photo shows a dog's eye view of where Flame is trying to nest now -- under a spare dining room chair because behind the chair and to the left is a cardboard box holding a few pieces of firewood.  Flame was trying to shred the cardboard for nesting material.

This is about the point in their pregnancy where the breeder starts to feel a little guilty about what she's putting her bitch through, knowing it's only going to get worse (more uncomfortable) until she whelps.  Flame got a special treat last night, sleeping next to me on the bed, and she did a lot of readjusting to try to get comfortable.

Today and tomorrow are my last two full days of teaching classes.  Next Wednesday Gary goes in for the first back surgery.  I owe a debt of gratitude to my substitute instructors as well as my students for their understanding and cooperation during the next month!   I also owe a huge thank you to the various friends who've offered to help out with Flame and the other dogs.  THANKS TO EVERYONE!

In the meantime, it seems that Julia's temperature has dropped, which typically means puppies will be born within 24 to 48 hours.   Click here to see the latest report from Deb La Monica.

Sorry that I haven't had time to do more frequent updates.  There hasn't been too much to report, however (just an ever-expanding belly!).

Fri.

9/8 The best thing that happened yesterday was Flame got her appetite back!   It's taking less effort and bribery to get her to eat.  In fact, she's been wolfing down her meals the past two days.  It's hard to tell from the photos above, but her belly is bigger, her breasts are swelling and nipples are enlarging.  I have been able to feel puppy movement -- which is always very exciting!

I am working my hospital visits to see Gary around Flame, making sure I'm not gone for more than 4 hours at a time, so she can potty and eat.   It will be more difficult to visit Gary after his next surgery on Monday, so I am hoping that all goes well.  Fortunately, friends are willing to help out as needed.

When I came home late this afternoon, there was a noticeable change in her body.  She's "dropped" and definitely looking like a football.  Tomorrow I'll get some standing & top-down photos.   I've also started taking her temperature and will list it in the left-hand columns in red.  "Normal" canine temperature is around 101.5 but lower is normal during the last few days of a pregnancy, usually ranging from 100.3 to 100.8.

Flame's attitude and energy level are great.  She still wants to run around like crazy, playing with Keeper and Journey -- but I'm limiting that sort of activity.  The last thing we need is a high speed collision!

51 / 56 Sun. 9/10 Everything continues to go well.  Compared with her mom, Flame's digging/nesting activities are mild at this point.  By now Keeper had just about dug her way to China!   What I find most fascinating is Flame's behavior toward Journey.  She is adamant that both Journey & Keeper stay out of "her" places that she likes to hang out (such as behind the couch in the family room), and because all my dogs have excellent body language & dog communication skills, there's no problem.  They respect Flame's possessiveness.  However, for no reason that I can discern, Flame will suddenly get pissed off at Journey.  He'll just be hanging out, minding his own business, and suddenly she's on a mission!  She stares, then stalks and then hovers over him.  I cannot tell if she thinks he's a puppy that got out of line or a potential threat to her puppies.  (Another reason I think she's going to be a drill sergeant of a mother!)  Fortunately he acts appropriately -- just freezes in position -- until I intervene.  This is another one of those times when I wish the dogs could TALK!

You may be wondering where the other dogs are, since I've only referred to Journey & Keeper.  Last Tuesday Tyler went to stay with Aunt Stephanie & her family (Bob, Daniel & Tyler's granddaughter, Crystal).  Tyler visits there on a regular basis and just loves all the attention they lavish on him.  (He's like a retired Snowbird, but instead of going south to California or Arizona, he heads north to Bellevue!.  He'll be there until the puppies are a couple of weeks old and life calms down around the house.  I definitely want him around the puppies because he's a great grandpa type of influence -- puts up with puppies to a point, but then nicely, but firmly, tells them enough is enough.

The PWDs are kept separate from the Belgians as they (the PWDs) don't have the best dog skills.  There have been a couple altercations and I don't want to take any chances with puppies around the corner.  Plus, Gary says that Kalypso was NOT a good mother (Apollo's mom), so we don't want any of that bad mother karma rubbing off on us!   Although it's a hassle to keep the breeds segregated, at least it's fairly easy with the layout of this house and yard.

52 / 57 Mon. 9/11 When I got home from the hospital (click here for Gary's latest update) I took Flame's temp and spent a few minutes hoping to feel puppy movement.  And boy did I ever!  It felt like they were having a boxing match in there...lots of little bodies moving around quite vigorously!   Flame was a little less enthusiastic for her lunch today, but she's still very happy and energetic.  Her favorite position these days is standing over the top of me as I'm sitting on the couch -- she wants her belly massaged.  And yes, I grant her wish!

Above are different digital photos taken of one x-ray on the light box.  You can see their little skeletons in the JPEGs when you view the larger versions.  (The bright spot is from the camera flash.)   (I didn't take a photo of the other view, with Flame on her back, as it was harder to make out skeletons.)  We counted 6 little skulls and spines.  In the other view that I did not post, two kids are already pointed in the correct direction, head first.  Dr. Cumming estimates two days maximum before puppies arrive.   Flame is getting quite a bit of milk and everything looks good.

54 / 59 Weds. 9/13 Nothing significant is happening today.  The puppies are not as active in Flame's belly -- probably because it's getting so crowded in there!   Flame has a little less appetite and seems a little more lethargic.  She's taking more naps today.  The living & dining rooms have been transformed into a nursery, with tarps over the floor and old blankets on top.  My midwives have gone over my supply list and we seem to be in good shape, so now we wait!

Cathy stayed with Flame today while I visited Gary in the hospital.  In the four hours I was gone, I think Flame's belly got a little wider and lower to the ground.   Cathy had to rearrange the living room to prevent Flame from getting wedged under a chair (nesting), so more x-pen barricades have been erected.   Flame ate a good dinner about 7:00 pm, but refused liver bars at 8:30.  This waiting is the hardest part!
